Sam Szteinbaum, a consultant with TRI Corporation, works with clients on Leadership Development programs focused on building business acumen and effective teamwork collaboration. He has extensive business experience, both in large organizations as well as with entrepreneurial efforts. Sam is currently Chairman and CEO of The Wonder Years, a Bay Area preschool provider, as well as an advisor and member of the Board of Directors at a software start-up. He recently retired from Hewlett Packard Co., after a 25-year career where his last role was that of Chief Learning Officer.

Bio

As Hewlett Packard’s CLO, Sam was responsible for an extended team of over 500 professionals and a multi-hundred million dollars budget across all of HP’s businesses and functions. His team drove client engagement, curriculum development and deployment for over 13,000 courses including technical, sales and leadership development activities worldwide. During his tenure as CLO, the learning function created new programs to align 15,000 managers with a new corporate business direction/approach driven by a new CEO. A new LMS system was put in place to integrate learning with performance management and people development, and efficiencies achieved representing over $100 million dollars per year.

Before becoming HP’s CLO, Sam spent over 20 years working in a number of business roles. During these years, he worked in multiple functions such as Finance, Marketing and General Management. Sam also spent two years in South America where he led the Treasury function in a country and almost three years in Singapore, where he led an inkjet printer division’s Marketing function.

During Sam’s last business role, he was the Vice President and General Manager for the Consumer Computing business in North America, which grew from $1 billion to $6 billion under his leadership, was consistently and increasingly profitable, including the very successful integration of Compaq into HP.

Accomplishments & Awards

  • Developed new management development offering, “Leading for Results” which was cascaded to all 15,000 managers at HP, using over 500 senior leaders as instructors.
  • Increased HP’s PC (Desktops and Notebooks) retail market share in the U.S. to over 50% and consistently increased profitability.
  • Drove the Consumer PC merger consolidation between Compaq and Hewlett Packard within North America, exceeding savings targets and achieving profits in the first quarter after the merger.
  • Launched numerous new categories and products into the market across several regions (Notebooks, TV’s, Inkjet printers, Networking products, LaserJet printers, etc.)

Personal

Sam lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and two children. He enjoys playing soccer and tennis. In his free time, Sam invests and manages commercial properties, which he expects will become his next profession.
